The Works of
LAURENCE WELLBORN
My Philosophy
Using my vivid imagination has been the most important element in the
works I create as an artist. For this I am extremely grateful, for
through the element of imagination, I feel FREE – free to create,
creating atmospheres, other worlds, life forms, and design elements
that exclusively come from my inner voice and vision. That freedom
gives me confidence I can create something out of a simple circle,
square, or triangle. On occasion, I use resources to help me express my
ideas. Because my drawings take many many hours to complete (sometimes
it takes a month or so). I spend time with my drawings, from there,
metamorphosis occurs, one image leading into another, one connected
shape to another, not knowing where my drawing will take me next. This
is the Journey. Just like any kind of travel, one can never know what
kind of experience one will have moment to moment. Many of my drawings
for me have been this kind of Journey. I hope others who view my work
will sense this. Of course, it will be their own Journey.
In 1977, I graduated from Southern Illinois University with an art
degree, emphasis in metalsmithing. Through metalsmithing, I've learned
the element of patience, attention to detail & elements of design. This
experience has been invaluable in my style of art today. The medium I
enjoy the most is the pencil. Now that color is in my life, watercolor,
acrylic and in my future works oil will create a new dimension for me.
Hope you enjoy my world.
